I was raised in a family of dog people from Ohio, my parents bred, trained and competed Boxers in the AKC Ring. My adult career in the hospitality and club business spanning 45 years, (31 with one company) kept my nose to the grindstone, relocating across the country. Now empty nesters, my wife and I have lived in Arizona since 1981.
Although we have always had sporting dogs in our family with Springer’s and Goldens, our introduction to Brittany’s did not occur until year 2003. Shortly after we put down our wonderful Springer of 14 years, one of my oldest buddies that I occasionally hunted with as a teenager, suggested that we “take a look” at Brittany’s. We became aware of a breeder in Tonto Basin, Arizona who had a litter of pups on the ground and decided to take a day-trip to “just look”. If you are like most people, just looking never works out. We came home that day with an 8 week old boy. I paid more than I wanted to but my wife strongly suggested that we buy him. On the way home I called my old time buddy to tell him about it. He asked what the pedigree was and after telling him, he said that I “must start hunting again or begin field trialing”. I did both and never looked back.
